Overview
A gaze-powered communication and care-insight system designed for assisted living environments, enabling residents with limited mobility to express their needs through eye-tracking, while giving caregivers the pattern-based intelligence to provide better, more proactive care.
My Role
I owned the overall design direction, interaction models, and final deliverables; from the initial concept framing on Friday night through the polished prototype we submitted Monday evening.
The Problem
Hospice and assisted living residents with severe mobility limitations, those who cannot press a call button, speak clearly, or use a touchscreen, are left without a reliable way to communicate even their most basic needs.
The patients
In 2024, 1.91 million Medicare beneficiaries were enrolled in hospice care - a 4.4% increase from 2023. Over 53% of all Medicare decedents now use hospice. Meanwhile, 12.2% of U.S. adults have a mobility disability. These are people who are cognitively aware but physically unable to express themselves.
The caregivers
On the other side, caregivers are stretched to breaking point. Nurse-to-patient ratios range from 12:1 up to 23:1.
They respond to individual requests reactively, with no way to see patterns across a resident's day. A resident whose comfort-related needs spike every evening goes unnoticed until something escalates.
